Current Position:
Deputy Director, Computer Centre, University of Auckland
Employment Background:
1965: Started computing on IBM 1620.
1975: Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics, University of Auckland.
1973-1980: Developed operating systems for Alpha-16 minicomputers,
compilers and run-time support for Snobol and SMALL (Small Machine
Algol-Like Language) compilers for Burroughs B6700, user management
system for DEC-10. Pacific area editor for JUB (Journal for Users of
Burroughs large systems).
1978: 8 months sabbatical leave at the Rekencentrum, Technische Hogeschool
Eindhoven, Netherlands. Development work on SMALL compiler, research
project on B7700 usage monitoring.
1981-present: Deputy Director, Computer Centre, University of Auckland.
Responsible for system software on all the Centre's systems and for the
development and coordination of networking on campus.
Networking activities:
1985: BITnet link Auckland - Victoria Universities. Required
development of BiSync handler on Series 1 front-end to VM system.
1986: NZ Universities begin full networking using X.25 and Coloured
Book protocols. Development of Blue Book file transfer tunneling to
provide BITnet link via X.25 from NZ to NetNorth in Canada.
1989: Setting up of Tuia consortium, an informal internetwork of all
three of New Zealand's research networks. Waikato University
implements PACCOM gateway, providing a reliable e-mail link to the
Internet.
1990: Co-ordinated design and implementation of Kawaihiko, a network of
leased lines and Cisco routers connecting all the New Zealand
Universities with an IP network. Participation in PACCOM meetings.
1991: August PACCOM meeting. November IEPG meeting Santa Fe
1992: Tuia in process of developing its legal entity as an Incorporated
Society. Member of technical working party to design and implement
Frame Relay backbone for TuiaNet.
IEPG and IETF meetings: March San Diego, November Washington DC.
IETF Working Groups: Operational Statistics, Internet Accounting.
Implemented first version of Internet Accounting Meter, currently
developing next version of accounting MIB.
Hobbies:
Backstage Theatre. Lighting design (more than 40 shows), Stage hand,
Dresser, ... Currently Chairman of New Zealand Association of
Theatre Technicians.
Photography, Music (especially classical, ragtime and jazz).
